Let’s Plan Your Engagement Photos

Tell me what you’re picturing: Cleveland architecture, a garden, a Lake Erie sunset, or a place that matters to you. I’ll help you choose a setting and plan the timing for the best light.

Call Mike at (216) 236-4742 or email me about your session.

I Start With What Matters to You

Before we choose a location, I want to hear what you’re picturing. You might love the look of Cleveland architecture, prefer a quiet garden, or want photographs along Lake Erie. A place with personal meaning can be a good starting point, too.

We’ll talk about the kind of photographs you enjoy, how much time you want, and whether this is an engagement session or a surprise proposal. If you’re unsure where to begin, that’s fine. We can work through the possibilities together.

I Always Look at the Setting as Part of Your Photograph

My experience photographing landscapes and architecture shapes the way I make portraits. I pay attention to light, lines, reflections, and the space around you. Sometimes a wider composition helps tell the story; sometimes the strongest photograph is much closer.

Choosing a location is only the beginning. During your session, I’m looking for the angle and light that bring the people and the place together. That may mean changing where we stand or seeing a useful frame in an opening, path, or building.

Clear Direction - I Don't Make It Complicated

Being in front of a camera can feel awkward at first. I’ll give you practical direction about where to stand, how to turn, and where to look. You won’t have to figure everything out while wondering whether the photograph is working.

I also talk with you throughout the session. Conversation, a little humor, and simple movement can help you settle in. If an idea doesn’t feel comfortable, we’ll change it. The photographs should reflect you, including the way you naturally show affection.

Room for Playful and Quiet Moments

Some couples enjoy a lift, a spin, or a playful walk. Others prefer holding hands, leaning together, or taking a moment without much movement. We can include more than one mood in your photographs.

I offer ideas while watching for the expressions and interactions that happen between them. A laugh after a pose can be just as worth keeping as the portrait we planned.

Have an idea—or a question about being photographed?

I’d be happy to talk it through with you.

If You’re Planning a Surprise Proposal

We’ll communicate beforehand about the location, timing, and a simple way for me to recognize when you’re ready. That preparation helps me photograph the proposal as it happens while you focus on your partner.

Afterward, we can make portraits while you enjoy the excitement. My Wade Lagoon and Schoepfle Garden pages show examples of proposals and the photographs that followed.

What to Wear and Bring

Choose clothing you feel good wearing and can move in comfortably. Your outfits can complement each other without matching exactly. Think about the setting as well as the look: a garden path or beach may call for different shoes than an indoor location.

If you’d like an outfit change, let me know while we plan the session so we can allow for it. You’re welcome to ask questions, mention outfit ideas or share anything else. Your perspective can make any session more meaningful and successful.

One Location or Two?

One location gives us time to explore different backgrounds and make a variety of photographs without traveling between stops. Two locations can offer a bigger change in scenery, such as a garden followed by a vineyard or city surroundings followed by the shoreline.

We’ll consider your priorities, the session length, travel time, and the light. The package you choose should give us enough room for the photographs you want.

Your Edited Gallery

Your package includes an online gallery of finished photographs you can download, share, and print. All delivered photographs receive color and exposure edits. The number of favorites receiving detailed retouching depends on your package.

We’ll discuss the details before you book, including what’s included and the agreed delivery timing. You can review the current packages on my main engagement photography page.

From Cleveland Landmarks to Lake Erie Sunsets

An engagement session can feel entirely different depending on where we begin. The Arcade brings grand indoor architecture into the photographs. Around Wade Lagoon in University Circle, the water, paths, and Cleveland Museum of Art offer a mix of intimate portraits and wider views. At Huntington Beach in Bay Village, the shoreline changes with the evening light.

I photograph couples beyond Cleveland, too. Schoepfle Garden in Lorain County offers flowers, trees, and quiet paths, while a vineyard can bring a different mood to the same session. These are examples of what’s possible, not a fixed list of places you must choose from. We can start with a location you love or find one together.

One Setting or Two?

A single location gives us time to explore without rushing. We can make close portraits, photographs that show the setting, and a few playful images as the session unfolds. For a longer story, two locations can add variety—perhaps a garden followed by a vineyard, or University Circle followed by a Lake Erie sunset. We’ll plan the route and timing before the session so the second stop adds something meaningful.

Engagements, Surprise Proposals, and the Seasons Ahead

Planning a surprise proposal? I can help you settle on a spot, work out a simple cue, and photograph the moment as it happens. Afterward, we can take portraits while you enjoy the excitement together.

Late October and early November can still bring beautiful color in Northeast Ohio. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s visits can also be a chance to celebrate an engagement and gather photos while you’re together.
