Miners Falls photo in Munising Michigan at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore - MI

I was excited about spending three days at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Miners Falls was high on my must see checklist.

It did not disappoint.

The waterfall had plenty of what we all want – flow.

What’s the address? Well, the trail I used starts at the trailhead:  E9558 State Highway M28 E, Munising, MI 49862.

Yes, there are signs on the main highway, but I think someone wasn’t generous. A couple more signs for this and other attractions would have helped. I was determined to find it, so I got there in the late morning. I’d love to see it at different times of day and different seasons. I arrived in mid-September. The weather was warm and clear, which helped.

I followed the trail to the lookout, and that was OK. I got  a good view of the waterfall along with other hikers, tourists and sight seekers eager to get their images of the 50-foot waterfall. With some trees and large branches on the right, I kept trying to get the ideal angle.

What did I do next?

Well, I saw a guy climb up from the bottom. He clearly went beyond the lookout and made his way down. The large rocks made it easy to descend. It’s not like a scary cliff so the danger was nominal, not any worse than your local hill or slippery creek.  I followed his example and had a wonderful discovery near the end of the short voyage. Someone had tied a rope, which would make it easier to climb up from the lowest portion of the hillside.

Looking back, I wish I had moved closer. It’s not that large and not an imposing waterfall in Pictured Rocks by Munising, MI.

But this photo represents the best view I could get with my travel plans. Of course, I can’t wait to go back and get more waterfall pictures.

Located in the heart of Michigan’s breathtaking Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Miners Falls is a striking natural wonder. It cascades down a sandstone cliff, framed by lush greenery that comes alive with vibrant colors in the fall. The roaring water plunges into a rocky gorge, creating a mesmerizing scene of nature’s power and elegance.

This spot is accessible via a well-maintained trail, just 1.2 miles round trip from the parking area, making it a favorite for hikers and photographers alike. The best time to view Miners Falls is during late spring and early summer when the water flow is at its peak from snowmelt, or in autumn, when the surrounding forest transforms into a kaleidoscope of red, orange, and yellow.

The area’s rich history includes its ties to the indigenous Ojibwe people, who lived in harmony with the region’s natural beauty, and later, the miners who gave the waterfall its name during Michigan’s mining boom in the 19th century.

Capture the majesty of Miners Falls in Michigan with this stunning photograph, perfect for nature lovers and adventurers alike. Whether you’re decorating your home, office, or a special space, this image will take you to the serene wilderness of Pictured Rocks.
