Capturing the Heart of Northeast Ohio: A Photographic Journey
Photography, for me, has never been about simply pressing a shutter button. It’s about the quiet anticipation before a baptism, the shared laughter during a family hike through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and the solemn, respectful silence of a memorial service. Living and working in Northeast Ohio provides a canvas that is as diverse as the people who call it home. From the industrial grit and architectural grandeur of downtown Cleveland to the rolling hills of Geauga County, I find inspiration in every corner of our region.
My mission is simple: to provide companies, families, and individuals with images that don’t just document a moment, but tell a story. Whether I’m working with a corporate team in a glass-walled boardroom or a toddler chasing a golden retriever through a field of wildflowers, my goal is to find the “right” photograph—the one that feels authentic, timeless, and deeply personal.
The Art of the Lifestyle Session: Families and Beyond
While my portfolio covers a vast range of subjects, my heart beat often syncs with lifestyle family photography. I believe the best photos aren’t staged in a sterile studio with forced smiles and matching sweaters. They happen in the “in-between” moments.
Northeast Ohio is blessed with an incredible park system that serves as the perfect backdrop for these stories. I often find myself scouting locations across our surrounding counties:
- Cuyahoga County: The dramatic overlooks at Everett Covered Bridge or the sunset views at Solstice Steps in Lakewood.
- Summit County: The serene waters of Silver Creek Metro Park or the rugged beauty of the Ledges in the CVNP.
- Medina County: The rustic charm of Buckeye Woods Park, which offers a quintessential Midwest feel in every season.
- Geauga County: The sprawling, peaceful landscapes of The West Woods, where the light filters through the trees in a way that feels almost magical.
- Lorain County: The stunning beachfronts at Lakeview Park, offering a “destination” feel right here in our backyard.
- Portage County: The hidden gems within Towners Woods, where the history of the land adds depth to every frame.
When I’m with a family, I want to capture the way a mother looks at her newborn, the way siblings tease each other, and even the way the family dog—who is, of course, a vital family member—manages to steal the spotlight. My experience with pet photography allows me to be patient; I know that you can’t rush a puppy or a shy cat. You have to wait for them to show you who they are.
Milestones and Transitions: Seniors and Individuals
There is a unique energy in senior portraits. It’s a bridge between childhood and the “real world.” I love working with high school seniors because they bring their own sense of style and ambition to the session. Whether we are capturing their athletic prowess on a local field or heading to a more urban setting, the goal is to reflect their personality.
One of my absolute favorite locations is the historic Arcade in downtown Cleveland. There is something breathtaking about the Victorian-era architecture, the sweeping golden staircases, and the way the light pours through the glass ceiling. Having taken numerous photos there, I’ve learned how to dance with the shadows and highlights of that iconic space to create images that look like they belong in a high-fashion editorial, yet remain grounded in the subject’s reality.
Professional Presence: Corporate and Commercial
For companies and organizations, a photograph is often the first “handshake” a client receives. In the world of corporate headshots and branding, I focus on balancing professionalism with approachability. A CEO needs to look authoritative, but they also need to look human.
I enjoy the challenge of stepping into a corporate environment—whether it’s a high-rise in downtown Cleveland or a small tech startup in Akron—and finding the visual language that fits their brand. My work with organizations extends beyond just headshots; I document the culture, the workflow, and the people behind the products. This commercial work requires a different set of muscles—precision, speed, and a keen eye for detail—but the reward is the same: seeing a company use my images to tell their unique story to the world.
Faith, Life, and Legacy: Events and Services
My work with churches and religious organizations is some of the most fulfilling photography I do. These are spaces of profound community and deep emotion.
- Baptisms and Dedications: These are milestones of hope. I stay in the background, capturing the water, the light, and the expressions of the family as they welcome a child into their faith community.
- Church Services and Special Events: From holiday pageants to community outreach programs, I document the spirit of the congregation.
- Funeral and Memorial Services: This is perhaps the most delicate part of my job. I approach these services with the utmost respect and discretion. Photography at a memorial isn’t about the “event”; it’s about capturing the legacy of a life lived and the love of those left behind. These photos often become some of the most cherished possessions a family owns, providing a visual record of the support and community that surrounded them during a difficult time.
Celebrating Life’s Highs
Of course, life is also full of exuberant celebration. My experience with events spans the entire spectrum of human joy:
- Birthdays: From the messy “smash cake” first birthday to the dignified 90th celebration.
- High School Events: Educational programs.
- Community Gatherings: Festivals and galas that make Northeast Ohio such a vibrant place to live.
In every event, I look for the candid moments—the “unposed” reality. The best photo of a birthday party isn’t usually the one where everyone is looking at the camera; it’s the one where the birthday girl is doubled over laughing with her best friend.
Why I Do What I Do
People often ask why I don’t specialize in just one area. Why shoot a corporate headshot in the morning and a baptism in the afternoon?
The answer is that life isn’t lived in a silo. The executive I photograph in the morning is the same person who wants a beautiful family portrait at Hinckley Reservation over the weekend. The high school senior I photograph today might be the person whose wedding I document five years from now.
Being a photographer in Northeast Ohio means being a part of a tapestry. I love the technical challenge of adjusting to different lighting—from the harsh midday sun at Edgewater Park to the dim, moody lighting of a historic church. I love the psychological challenge of making a nervous subject feel like a movie star. But most of all, I love the “right” photograph.
The “right” photograph is the one that makes you catch your breath. It’s the one that makes a mother tear up, a business owner feel proud, and a grieving family feel comforted. It is an honor to be the person behind the lens for these moments.
I’ve spent years learning the trails of our state parks and the corridors of our city’s most famous landmarks. I know where the light hits the Old Stone Church at 4:00 PM and which trail at Nelson-Kennedy Ledges provides the most dramatic depth for a portrait. I bring all of that local knowledge and technical expertise to every single shoot, ensuring that when you hire me, you aren’t just getting a person with a camera—you’re getting a storyteller who loves this region as much as you do.
